You can be a Catechist!

From students to retirees, Catechists form one of the largest volunteer groups in Dioceses across NSW and the ACT reaching out to over 100,0000 young people every week in State Schools.

There isn’t a profile that fits exactly who a Catechist is. The one thing they have in common is a desire to invest in the future of the young people in our country. Catechists are lawyers, mothers, students, secretaries, waitresses, retired grand-fathers, university lecturers, ex-footballers, doctors, teachers aides and tradesmen.

Can you invest 1 hour a week to ensure that every Catholic child has the chance to hear the message of God’s love? Join our team and discover how rewarding sharing our Faith with children can be. Contact Anne on (02) 4332 2216.

Be God's Volunteer...

Our aim is to provide every Catholic child in our parish with a religion lesson each week. These are the public schools in our parish:
• Killarney Vale Primary School
• Brooke Avenue Primary School
• Bateau Bay Primary School
• The Entrance Primary School
• Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College
The high schools are visited one day per term and the primary schools on Thursdays weekly.

...be a Catechist.

What is involved?

You are invited by the Church to share your faith with children in State Schools by giving about 2 hours of your time each week during the school term.
This includes:
• Lesson preparation
• Prayer
• Teaching for 30-40 minutes

What do I need?

Anyone with the desire to help can become a Catechist. There are very few
prerequisites.
These include:
• A willingness to share your faith
• An interest in children and the ability to communicate with them
• A sense of humour
• Patience and perseverance - results are not always immediate

What support would I receive?

There are many ways we assist you in this venture:
• Support from the local Catechist group of your parish community. They share your faith interests and goals and are led by a Coordinator.
• A training course is available to help you develop basic teaching skills and make the best use of your own gifts and talents. It will also deepen your own understanding of Scripture, the Church and Education theory.
• A teacher’s manual containing easy to follow lesson plans.
• A student activity book for each child.
• In-service days to add to developing your classroom skills.
• Retreat days to develop and deepen your faith.
• Four newsletters each year in which Catechists share news, information, teaching suggestions and reflections.
• Regional Coordinators who assist Catechists. Here at The Entrance Parish we have a CCD Resource Centre on the Church grounds open Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm, and at other times by arrangement with Michael Tebbutt, Regional Coordinator.
