disciples walking from Jerusalem towards Emmaus, a journey we are told of seven miles. They are joined by Jesus, though they do not know it.
They are going the wrong way!!! They are followers of Jesus. They have witnessed the Crucifixion. Their hope had been that Jesus would be the one to set Israel free. They have given up. For them it is all over. They are going home.
Jesus walks with them and listens to their disappointment. Cleopas even tells Jesus about the rumours of the Resurrection, and the women’s testimony…….but of Him they saw nothing!!
Jesus spends the day teaching the two disciples from the Prophets that Christ should suffer and so enter his glory. In the Scriptures we have the source of our hope. We have encouragement to never give up. We are put in the right direction. Emmaus is the wrong direction. Jerusalem is the right direction.
Today we have a teaching on the Mass. The whole Gospel is about recognising Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread. We read the Scriptures, we break bread with Jesus, we are sent out on Mission. We are not just listening to history. We are enacting as we pray.
