His first mission is to select a team and we read the call of the fishermen Simon and Andrew and then James and John.
Fourteen times in his Gospel Matthew says that Jesus’ mission is in fulfilment of the Prophets. This is the seventh; ‘the people that lived in darkness have seen a great light; on those who dwell in the land and shadow of death a light has dawned.’
Matthew is writing to a Jewish Christian community. We meet him firstly as a tax collector. His conversion renews in him his deep religious roots and he is at pains to help the community to see fulfilment of prophecies in the life of Jesus.
Jesus’ ministry begins with the words : “ repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” These are the exact same words that John the Baptist used. The effect of the teaching of Jesus is very different. “He went around the whole of Galilee teaching….proclaiming the Good News…..and curing all kinds of diseases and sicknesses among the people.
